Rescue Me ID: 16-01-24-00648Bently (male)
This is a COURTESY POST PLEASE CONTACT ROXY GARCIA: ROGARCIA58@YAHOO.COM AND TELL HER A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE AND HOW ADDING BENTLY WOULD LOOK LIKE. **HOUSTON AREA ADOPTION ONLY NO EXCEPTIONS-THANK YOU** Bently is approximately 1 1/2 years old. He weighs 50 lbs. and is a typical English Bulldog. He is looking for a home with a lot of time to dedicate to taking care of him. His wrinkles require daily cleaning as do his eye folds. It is important that his new family be familiar with the breed. He is not one to go for walks. He prefers to get his exercise in the backyard in short spurts. He is still young and very playful. He loves getting attention from people. He has a sweet disposition with a lot of personality. He is definitely a lap dog that doesn't know his size. Bently will need to go to a home with a fenced yard an no pool, this is not an apartment/condo dog. If you are looking for a big boy to add to your family you might want to consider setting up a meet and greet to see if Bently is a good fit for your family. An interview with an approved adoption counselor and a home visit are required as part of the adoption process for Bently. Adoption fee for Bently is $500. Before You Adopt A Bulldog A Bulldog may not be the right choice for every family. Living with a Bulldog can be very rewarding, but you must be committed to meeting the Bulldog's particular needs. Some things to consider: Bulldogs are perpetual children: they never grow up. A Bulldog does best in a loving environment, free from fear and neglect. They are happiest when with people and require lots of attention from people. They may chew throughout their lifetimes. A Bulldog should never be left unattended in your backyard. Not only is it dangerous to your Bulldog's well being, but Bulldogs are often targeted for theft. Possible Health Problems Bulldogs have numerous known genetic defects and are subject to various illnesses that affect many breeds. Common Bulldog health problems you may encounter include: elongated soft palate, small trachea, allergies, dermatitis, demodetic mange, eye lid anomalies, hip dysplasia and heart problems Owners should watch carefully for signs of skin irritation and scratching. Not all veterinarians are knowledgeable about the health problems Bulldogs may have, you should consult experienced Bulldog owners or the rescue to find a capable veterinarian. Any veterinarian who will be doing surgery on your Bulldog should have previous experience with putting Bulldogs under anesthesia. Danger of Overheating Bulldogs are extremely intolerant of heat. They must be kept in an air-conditioned area with limited trips outside when the outside temperature is over 80 degrees or the humidity is high. Close supervision is required during outside activity, especially in spring and summer to prevent over-exertion leading to over-heating. They also are not usually capable of prolonged physical activity whether the temperature is very warm or cold: a Bulldog is not for someone who enjoys taking a dog for long walks through the countryside. After Adoption a period of adjustment is expected during which the Bulldog and the new owner will be getting acquainted with each other, and the Bulldog will be take time settling in to a new routine. If we have any doubts about a Bulldog's ability to deal with certain situations, we put restrictions on the type of home in which it will be placed. We also provide guidelines for the new owners to ensure that they are aware of any special treatment the Bulldog may require. New owners will find the transition into owning a rescue Bulldog to be relatively simple. The Importance of Temperament when selecting a pet, the most important breed characteristic to consider by far is its temperament or disposition. Failure to thoroughly investigate temperament is the biggest mistake anyone can make in selecting a pet, especially a Bulldog. In my experience, far too many people select a dog based solely on its physical appearance, and those who do so usually live to regret it. Modern Bulldog cannot tolerate isolation. Bulldogs simply cannot stand to be ignored. They crave attention, and they will do almost anything to get it. To the dismay of their owners, many Bulldogs prefer to pursue the role of a lapdog. They fail to comprehend that some humans find their typical weight of 50 to 60 pounds less than comfortable on their laps. It is nearly impossible to lavish too much love and attention on a Bulldog - and only he decides when he has had enough of it. When he has had enough loving, he will finally wander off somewhere to find peace and quiet. If you're not a hands-on type of dog lover who enjoys close and frequent contact and a few wet kisses, a less affectionate pet may better satisfy your needs. The Bulldog's constant craving for attention and the need to entertain humans and be entertained by them is not for everyone. There is a limit, however, to how much strenuous physical activity (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-12-19-00082Stewart (male)
Adoption fee $350 Location: Houston area Hi, my name is Stewart and although I am not so 'Little' I have lots of love to give. I was surrendered by my owner because she had to move out of the country and could not take me with her. I am a playful, active boy who is now searching for my new home. Some of my favorite things are playing with squeaky toys, snuggling in your lap and suckling on my favorite blanket. I currently share a home with a few very friendly, fun loving dogs and a cat. Ok, maybe the cat isn't so playful and fun loving, but I don't mind at all. I am hoping to be adopted by a home that also has a playful, friendly dog who will be my forever friend. I am crate trained, no anxiety and potty trained, but I have had a few accidents when left unattended. I am slow to warm up to new visitors who come to my home and I prefer if those visitors do not approach my crate when I am inside as I am not sure if they mean me harm. I dream of a home who has the patience to let me settle in and once I feel comfortable, I am a snuggle bug and lap dog deluxe. I will require a home with older children as I do get excited and I will jump up and down with glee and I wouldn't want to knock a young child down. My rescue has provided me with a surgery to repair my torn ACL in my rear leg and don't you worry, I am all healed up and ready to romp and play with you. I am ready to start my New Year with you, so please fill out my adoption application today. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-09-14-00093Big Footie (male)
I am off to Christmas vacation and Footie is staying home with our caretaker for the ranch. I will be back after the first of the year but I thought I would post so you might ponder choosing him if you are shopping during the Christmas break. None of the pictures are able to show the dance of his step as he has pleased you or the push of his giant head as he nussles against you for loving. Adoption fee used to neuter other strays: covers only a portion of cost to rescue. Big Foot or Footie I have always owned dogs and other animals. I had a career in education and recreation, serving in many capacities. I began dog rescue as a librarian when I asked children what kind of summer program they would like and they chose dog rescue, dog training, and dog therapy. I now live in land adjoining the Big Thicket National Preserve one of our National parks and a designated International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations in 1981. While it is a land of magical plants and wildlife it is also an area of Texas which had great prosperity through nearby oil, offshore, and refinery jobs that no longer exist. With a populace not yet ready to understand the need for an education the middle class is shrinking, more people are renters, few programs exist for low cost spay and neuter, and many fine animals are dumped. Footie's mother was dumped and she slipped into the woods to try to raise a litter of puppies as she competed with coyotes, wolves, raccoons, bobcats and other for food. Footie came out of the woods one day and crawled under my car for shade with his skin a mass of gooey gray matter that smelled foul. I took him the vet, Tom Granger, a college friend from Texas A & M University. I said 'We will have to put him down, won't we?' He replied no 'I will supply the medicine - you cure him'. I said 'What is he?' He replied 'A black dog.' Footie grew to be no average black dog. His name denotes big feet which led to a massive body. I looked at breeds and he may be a bangdogge or bulldog bred with a mastiff. In the big thicket people will have enough money and create an idea of having a great hunting dog, say a hog hunting dog, pay a lot then come on hard times and drop them in the woods. One of the characteristics footie has in common with the bangdogge and mastiff is low rank drive. Footie can be dominated by a bossy Jack Russell, or dachshund. He is person oriented rather than hunting making him easy to keep up with on a walk or in the yard. He is loyal and protective of the family and the dog pack but very responsive to discipline. He can be disciplined with a raised voice or a spank with a rolled up paper. He pushes his face against you, leans in, and falls against to cuddle or curl up and sleep. He loves to sleep in the bed but will sleep in a pallet on the floor or kennel. He is so soft heated and tender he has to be gently doctored if he has a wound. He is a fine, beautiful, loving massive black dog with a little white on his chest. He has made two errors in judgment in the whole period at Queen Oaks. Once when another dog chased the family goat he caught it by the nose and held it until he got roughly hollered at, releasing and slinking off to hide for whole day. On another occasion, the smaller dogs were chasing a small terrier, as all ran past him. He interpreted his job as a catch dog again and snagged the passing Jack Russell Terrier. Upon command he released; the terrier was bruised but ok. He is magnificent; I did not offer him for adoption locally because I was afraid someone would try to fight him, due to his size not realizing his gentle, almost fragile nature. He is all about trying to please, obey, and be part of the family. Smaller dogs can curl up and sleep against him or leaning their heads on him. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-03-08-00119Autum (female)
Autum was abandoned on an isolated road in SW Dallas that many dogs are abandoned on. She came running up to one of our volunteers that was going on to private property to tend to other dogs that were abandoned on the same road that we are trying to find homes for. She was so friendly and tried to jump in the volunteers car. We believe she is about a three year old, bulldog mix. She is super friendly to people but is choosy with dogs she considers friends. We think she might do best in an only dog household and would like her to go to a home where someone has plenty of time to work with her. She is an excitable girl who's tail wags almost constantly and loves to have her belly rubbed. She needs some etiquette and leash training for sure but she is such a happy, loving girl it will be well worth the effort. She is current on vaccines, spayed, micro chipped and on heart worm preventative. If you would like to meet Autum please email us for a pre adoption questionnaire. If your home looks like a good match for her we will schedule a meet and greet. A home visit is part of her adoption process therefore she is available for adoption in the immediate DFW area only. Her adoption fee is $150. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Bulldog in Texas
Bulldogs can make good pets in Texas if they match your IifestyIe. The English Bulldog is a stocky breed with an intimidating appearance, but is one of the gentlest types of dogs. However, the Bulldog does have excellent guarding instincts. Bulldogs love human attention. Some bulldogs have a dominant streak and need a master who is firm and exudes leadership. Bulldogs do well with children and make great family pets. Bulldogs can live in an apartment but need a daily walk. Energy levels of Bulldogs vary widely but the breed is relatively inactive indoors. Bulldogs are prone to health problems and tend to slobber profusely.
